Anyone can learn any instrument, but getting started is the hardest and most crucial part.  These characteristics tend to make beginning easier.

The trumpet requires aligned teeth, but a slight overbite may work.  Ideally, no braces, but as usual, there are exceptions.  Large lips can find it difficult at first to play the trumpet, but can be overcome with some practice.  While trumpet doesn’t require the most air to play, it does require fast, controlled air.  If you’re good at blowing out birthday candles, this might be the instrument for you, if not, beginning may be very difficult.  A quick tongue is also a plus.

Personality: Trumpet players tend to be the center of attention, confident, loud, and, at worst, a bit arrogant.  While they can be very outgoing, their confidence may show in other ways.  Trumpet players tend to be rather intense, not meek, and do well when dealing with adversity.  More relaxed (but still confident) trumpet players tend to make good french horn players at the middle school level.

Brass requires strong lungs and lips, but doesn't require fast fingers like a woodwind.  While I‘m not encouraging it, brass can take more of a beating than woodwinds, so younger or less responsible students can learn these instruments as they mature.  Brass instruments require good musical aptitude – they do not just play themselves if you push down the right buttons.  For this reason, brass players need confidence, strong lips, and good ears.  The ability to change their voice from high to low pitch and the ability to mimic someone’s speaking can be signs of a good beginning brass player.
