Anyone can learn any instrument, but getting started is the hardest and most crucial part.  These characteristics tend to make beginning easier.

The flute is a tough instrument to master and requires agile fingers.  If a student has small hands, this could be a good fit.  Students with overbites, or aligned teeth may find it easier to play the flute as it is played similarly to blowing across the top of a bottle; underbites not recommended, nor are braces.  Determination and confidence is needed to first learn how to play the flute, but once the student becomes proficient enough to make a sound, they can very quickly learn many fun melodies.  Out of all the woodwinds, the flute requires the most lung strength and air control.

Personality: Flute players tend to be talkative, responsible, detail-oriented perfectionists.  They do not mind sitting in the front row of the band, nor being heard as their instrument can easily be picked out from the ensemble.  They typically have a good sense of humor and don’t take themselves too seriously, but can be a bit competitive and don’t mind being the center of attention.

Woodwind instruments require a more careful and responsible player than brass instruments as woodwinds can be fairly finicky and do not take abuse well.  Fast fingers are necessary on all woodwinds, but they do not require as much lung and lip strength as brass instruments.
